Woodlawn Baptist Church
Loving, Teaching, Serving, Reaching

Purpose:

The purpose of the Children's Bible Drill is to help children develop skills in the use of the Bible, increase their knowledge of the Bible, and learn how to apply the Bible to their lives.

Participants:

Children who are classified as the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders for the church year are eligible to participate. While most of the child's memorization and study time should be done at home, Bible Drill study time is provided at the church from October to April on Wednesday nights from 4:30- 5:15 p.m.

Types of Bibles Used:

  • Broadman & Holman Drill Bible (NIV)

Each child will purchase a Drill Bible from the church for $5 and is theirs to use for practice and drill.

Material to be Learned:

  1. Learn the Names of the books of the Bible in the proper order and be able to locate them in the Bible.
  2. Learn 25 verses and be able to recite them from memory.
  3. Memorize the titles and references of the key passages in this leaflet and be able to locate the references in the Bible.
  4. Learn answers to 5 Plan of Salvation questions.

Levels of Drill:

Church Drill
The Church Drill is conducted at each church.

Associational Drill
The Associational Drill is held at the time and place set by the association.

State Bible Drills
The State Drill is held at the time and place set by the state.

Types of Drills:

Quotation Drill
Six calls (Bible held but not opened) References are taken from this year's verses. The leader gives the reference (example: "Genesis 1:1"). If the participant knows the verse, he steps forward one step on the call "Start," prepared to quote the verse as it is stated in this leaflet and to give the reference.

Completion Drill
Six calls (Bible held but not opened) References are taken from this year's verses. The leader quotes the part of the verse which is underlined (example: "In the beginning God ..."). If the participant can complete the verse, he steps forward one step on the call "Start," prepared to quote the entire verse and to give the reference.

Book Drill
Six Calls (Bible used) Any book in the Bible may be used. The leader calls a book of the Bible. After the call "Start" is given, the participant places an index finger on the page, and steps forward, prepared to name the book preceding the one called, the book called, and the book following the one called (example: Exodus - "Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus").

Key Passage Drill
Six calls (Bible used) Only the key passages for this year will be used. The leader gives the reference by stating the subject or title given to the passage (example: "The Ten Commandments"). The participants finds 1 Corinthians 13, places his index finger on any portion of the passage, and steps forward. When called upon, the participant will state the title of the key passage and the reference. The leader will designate one or more verses to be read aloud by the participant.

Awards:

First-year participants in Children's Bible Drill will receive certificates. A seal is awarded to designate the highest level of achievement in the drills. Sixth grade participants who have been in the Children's Bible Drills for three years will receive an NIV Study Bible with their name engraved on it.

Scoring:

Judges mark on a score sheet. Only one mistake may be scored for a participant on a single call. Mistakes are:

  1. Time
Failure to step forward during the time allowed for the call.
  2. Response
Failure to respond properly on any call. Finding the wrong reference. Raising the hand voluntarily to accept a mistake.
  3. Behavior
Any behavior that is improper or disturbing to other participants or which, in the judge's opinion violates the spirit of the Children's Bible Drill. Sliding or jumping forward instead of stepping.
  4. Bible
Flipping pages carelessly. Closing the Bible with unnecessary noise. Abusing the Bible.
  5. Procedure
Starting before command "Start" is given. Stepping forward before index finger is on the correct reference. Lifting or turning pages after stepping out. Stepping back at any time, for any reason, after stepping forward unless the command "Attention" has been given.

(Note: At each level of drill, children are scored scored by one to three judges.)
